Street Closure – Broad Street between 5th and 6th Streets

WHO:  City of Richmond Department of Public Works

WHAT:  Street Closure

WHEN:  Saturday, September 17 thru Tuesday, September 18, 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

WHERE:  Westbound lane of Broad Street between 5th and 6th streets

BACKGROUND:  This street closing is taking place so the Department of Public Works can commence with work to commemorate the location in downtown Richmond where the finish line was constructed for the 2015 UCI Road World Championships.  The city of Richmond served as host of the cycling championships; only the 2nd time the event had been held in the United States in its history. The street marking project is occurring at the one-year anniversary of the event.

The event met or exceeded many of its goals. Plans to stripe the pavement to commemorate the event were announced in April when the City was presented with a Gold Level Certification from the Council for Responsible Sport for successful sustainability efforts during the races. The event is attributed with contributing to making the city more bike-friendly with over 23 miles of new bike infrastructure and 450 new bike racks. The event brought international attention to the city of Richmond and the region.
