Skill Games

Skill Games

Electronic “Skill Games” kiosks found in some restaurants, gas stations and convenience stores, have once again been ruled illegal in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Due to some confusion regarding the games again being banned, Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards announced a reasonable period of time for education and to alert everyone in Richmond that these machines are again banned.

Following the reasonable period time to educate the public about the reinstated ban and to allow businesses to make appropriate arrangements, the Richmond Police Department will begin enforcing the ban on January 1, 2024.

According to the Code of Virginia: Merely playing a skill game could result in a fine up to $500 (Class 3 Misdemeanor). Employees aiding in the operation of skill games could result in jail time for up to 12 months (Class 1 Misdemeanor). Managers or owners who conduct illegal gambling operations can face up to 5 years in jail (Class 6 Felony). Additional fines and the seizure of property are also possible.

“We’re hoping this reasonable period prior to enforcement will give all businesses ample time to make the necessary arrangements to be in compliance with the law,” said RPD Major Don Davenport.
