Traffic Alert - Replacing the bridge superstructure on North 1st Street over Interstate 95 ( work starting 3/14/22)

PREPARE FOR TRAFFIC IMPACTS AT N. 1ST STREET AND I-95 IN RICHMOND AS BRIDGE REPAIR PROJECT BEGINS

Expect lane, shoulder closures

RICHMOND, Va. – As part of a contract with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT), Kokosing Construction Company will be replacing the bridge superstructure on N. 1st Street over Interstate 95, beginning on or about Monday, March 14, 2022. To accommodate this multi-phased bridge project, VDOT is working with Kokosing to mitigate motorist impacts and ensure safety during construction.

N 1st Street: A long-term closure of northbound lanes will be in place on N. 1st Street between Baker and Duval Streets. The southbound lanes into the City of Richmond will remain open. Detour signage will direct northbound N. 1st Street travelers around the work zone (detour map pictured right). In addition, portions of Baker Street adjacent to the bridge will be closed. GRTC routes 2A, 2B, and 2C will also be affected along 1st Street at the bus stops on Duval & 1st and 1st & Baker.

Interstate 95: In conjunction with the bridge replacement, concrete repairs will be made on the bridge’s substructure elements, including piers and abutments. Long-term shoulder closures on I-95 will be required to accommodate the work under the bridge. Additionally, temporary overnight lane closures will be implemented on I-95.
